The Majlis, or visitor’s sitting room, in our home was right next to the front door, so that the men could come and go without disturbing the ladies of the house. It was furnished with rugs and cushions. A traditional brass studded chest, inlaid with intricate patterns, stood in one corner.
The stained glass panels above the windows , which always entranced me as a child, added more colour. If the side shutters were left open, a cooling breeze would often blow gently through from the garden.
