Most traditional Arab homes have one or two lewans. This is the shady space between the courtyard and the living rooms.
Houses with a lewan were very cool in the summer because of the open shade allowing the cool breeze to circulate. As well as serving as a passageway between rooms it was a popular sitting area far family members so there was always a bench or two in the lewan, covered with a comfortable cushion.
Sitting in the lewan felt like being outside as with no windows or doors it often looked over the garden area.
