House On The Corner

This is the exterior of the prosperous pearl merchant’s house close to our family home.

The two columns and archway over the doorway denote a wealthy household.

Often the pearl merchants also owned several of the large dhows (called Banouche) which the famous pearl divers would sail to the oyster beds for out in the Gulf.

The pearl merchant traded in the sought after local pearls which were renowned for their delicate pink lustre. He traditionally held on open majlis at this house every Eid day.
