The Blue Tiles
This was a very emotional work for me to paint, and still is, every time I look at it. It’s the way I remember the entrance to my childhood home. No photographs were ever taken- this was over seventy years ago - but it’s imprinted forever on my mind.
The archway, decorated with gypsum carvings. The small door within a door-a feature of many old houses- leading into our central courtyard with its palm tree and well. The wonderful uneven blue tiles. Ours was the only house which had them-l was very proud of them. And my mother was always beating and washing the rugs and carpets and leaving them there on the tiles to dry in the sun.
